2009-02-12 - Most recent Saison tasting was Voisin from an artisanal brewery in Ath, Belgium established in 2000. (6.0% abv, imported by Shelton Brothers.) Actually the story (as told by Michael Jackson) includes more interesting details: a husband and wife team, brewery is named "Brasserie Des Geants" or "Brewery of the Giants" and they brew in a restored medieval castle called "Irchonwelz". Sounds like it would be fun to visit.
Like most Saison's this one is refreshing, but in a somewhat austere way. The nose gives a sharp carbonic tang that could be described as minerally and--to me--nearly metallic. The palate reveals a peach-like fruitiness at the start before delivering a dry, flinty main act. With the dryness, one gets an overall impression similar to champagne. Color was deep bronze with an orange tint and a huge tenacious head and heavy lace. Seems like it would pair well with shrimp or sea scallops--perhaps with a light cream sauce. Might also pair well with caviar!
While I'm partial to more luscious beers, this grew on me and I came to enjoy the subtle interplay of mineral and fruit on the palate.
