First Certified Cicerones |

Five candidates passed the first Certified Cicerone exam given in San Diego on April 18. These five become the first holders of the “Certified Cicerone” title. The five are: Rob Gerrity - Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Scott Kerkmans - Four Points by Sheraton Ron Kloth - Papago Brewing Company Andrew Waer - Unaffiliated Neil Witte - Boulevard Brewing Company The exam took three and a half hours and included 200 fill-in the blank and short-answer questions followed by three essay questions, a demonstration and 12 beer samples presented in the tasting portion of the exam. Each successful candidate scored 70 percent or better on the tasting protion and 80 percent or better overall. Since January, 115 individuals have passed the online Certified Beer Server exam which is a prerequisite to the Certified Cicerone exam. |

The Cicerone Certification Program seeks to improve beer quality by certifying the knowledge and tasting skills of those who sell and serve beer. The more beer professionals understand about the many aspects of beer culture and service, the better beer will be for beer consumers. The Cicerone Certification Program seeks to ensure that consumers receive the best possible beer and enjoy its flavors to the greatest extent possible. To facilitate this, those who sell and serve beer need to acquire knowledge in five areas:

Beer Styles and Culture
Beer Tasting and Flavors
Brewing Ingredients and Processes
Pairing Beer with Food
To encourage participation by those with various interests and ambitions, the program offers three levels of certification beginning with the simplest and building to the most complex and demanding:
1. Certified Beer Server
2. Certified Cicerone
3. Master Cicerone
