What is a Cicerone?

The word Cicerone (sis-uh-rohn) designates hospitality professionals with proven experience in selecting, acquiring, and serving today's wide range of beers. To claim the title of Cicerone, one must earn the trademarked title of Certified Cicerone®. Those with a basic level of expertise gain recognition by earning the first-level title: Certified Beer Server. Only those who have passed the requisite test of knowledge and tasting skill can call themselves a Cicerone.

A Quick Introduction

"Cicerone" is pronounced "sis-uh-rohn"

The Cicerone Certification Program seeks to ensure that consumers receive the best quality beer at every service occasion. To facilitate this, those who sell and serve beer need to acquire knowledge in five areas:

  • Keeping and Serving Beer
  • Beer Styles
  • Beer Flavor and Evaluation
  • Beer Ingredients and Brewing Processes
  • Pairing Beer with Food

To encourage participation by those with various interests and ambitions, the program offers four levels of certification beginning with the simplest and building to the most complex and demanding:

  • Certified Beer Server
  • Certified Cicerone®
  • Advanced Cicerone®
  • Master Cicerone®

While more than 100,000 people from around the world have earned the first level certification, fewer than 20 people have passed the rigorous, two-day Master Cicerone exam.

Cicerone maintains a directory that includes the names of the individuals who have passed each exam. Click here to browse the directory (in English) and verify a given individual’s certification status.

Origins of the Cicerone Program

The Cicerone Certification Program started in the United States in 2008 to help improve professional beer knowledge and service skills during a time of rapid growth in craft beer popularity. Since then, it has been adopted by individuals and organizations all over the world with certification holders in more than 50 countries.

Today, we offer the full Cicerone website in both English and Spanish, enabling us to reach nearly two billion people around the globe. We also offer certain resources in other languages. Find out more about what we offer in [THIS LANGUAGE] in the sections of this page that follow.

Introduction to Beer

If you’re just getting started learning about beer, Cicerone has written an e-book to help you build a foundation of knowledge. In the time it takes to read a magazine, this e-book explains the origins and flavors of beer, including key beer styles. This is the perfect first book on beer for those just beginning to explore beer as well as those looking to start understanding the craft beer styles now available to consumers.

What is a Certified Beer Server?

Great beer service starts with fundamentals: beer clean glassware, a proper pour, and beer that hasn’t been ruined by improper handling. And in today’s beer world, every dialog between server and guest begins with talk of beer styles and flavors. The Cicerone Certified Beer Server exam assesses these skills to recognize those individuals who are prepared to serve today’s wide range of beers.

Prerequisites: None
Exam Cost: Initial test: $69 (USD), Retakes: $69 (USD). Exam fees are non-refundable.
Purchasing Options: Click here to purchase the exam. Purchase pages are in English—click here for a step-by-step guide with translations.
